If he will face that, what use the pleas of the desperate sisters, Cilny and Ciddey, what use the rage of Myal, with his genius for music and his imperfect talent for crime? He is seeking too the greatest stronghold of the deadalive: Ghyste Mortua, the ghost town in the mountains, and he means to destroy it. And now he will not be turned aside, no matter how you may threaten, curse or weep. Tanith Lee married author and artist John Kaiine in 1992. But not everyone welcomes an exorcist who will remorselessly deprive them of their beloved dead.ĭro began his vocation at an early age. Tanith Lee is a British writer of science fiction, horror, and fantasy. Some have bought his services for gold, and some have blessed him for his work. if you read the book, you'll know what i mean.Out of the dusk he comes striding, the stranger, the man in black, inevitable as death itself: Parl Dro-Ghost Slayer. On a side note, for anyone who's seen "The Sixth Sense" i am absolutely CONVINCED the person who wrote that screenplay has read this book and swiped thematic and detail elements from it for the script. Satisfying and dark, these stories strike one in the dimmest most sensual place where magic is at its best. complications along the way begin to reveal an essential truth about Dro even he is unable to see until a crisis arises which precipitates a shocking realization.

Parl Dro is our intrepid, if essentially dark, hero out to fulfill his destiny and destroy a legendary ghost town. The second tale is called "Kill the Dead" and is essentially a ghost story with a wicked twist. the language is evocative and beautiful, there is much reflection on the role of religion and the nature of humanity.

set on "Novo Mars" in the distant future, the story reads part romance, part science fantasy, vampire story and mystery all rolled into one. The first novella is called "Sabella: Or The Bloodstone" and follows the adventures of an irresistible woman on an unavoidable journey. There his destiny is joined to the roguish pick-pocketing troubadour Myal, and together they journey to Ghyste Mortua, the ghost city in the mountains. i have read it no less than 30 times, and can recite the first page of the book to myself from memory. Everything changes when Parl stops in a little town to deal with a pair of sisters, Cilny and Ciddey, one dead and one living. Actually a hardbound pairing of 2 longish short novellas, this is my favorite book of all time.
